The stress side, and the three levels it runs from.

Stress, anxiety, rage and 3am dread arrive faster and bigger in perimenopause because the alarm's firing threshold drops. This pillar reads which level is leading and settles it there: the body first, then the trigger, then the story.

What this pillar is

Emotions are signals, not instructions. Underneath "stress" one of four systems is usually doing the driving: fear, anger, grief, or a drive that has gone flat. And each runs from one of three levels: a body-first alarm, a learned trigger, or a mind-led story. Perimenopause turns the volume up on all of them at once, which is why tools that worked five years ago stop working now.

This pillar is mine. It is built on affective neuroscience, six years of 1:1 work using BWRT and other techniques at each of the three levels, and my own perimenopause. It is the same method behind Emotional Downshift, applied to this transition.

Start with the check

The free three-minute check asks six questions about one moment and tells you which level is leading, and the kind of help that fits it. Do that first; the rest of this page makes more sense with a result in hand.

What settles each level

Level 1, the body-first alarm

Heat, pounding heart, sudden rage or tears, waking already in alarm. Logic barely lands because the body is flooded. Settle the body first: a long slow exhale, cooling down, feet on the floor, movement, stepping outside. Do not self-assess or make decisions while flooded. If the surges are frequent or wreck your sleep, that also belongs with your GP or a menopause specialist, because turning the hormonal volume down helps everything else.

Level 2, the learned trigger

A tone, a person, a kind of comment, a time of the month, and the system fires before you have thought. Old patterns you had outgrown come back louder. Name the cue, track it across the month so an ambush becomes a readable pattern, and update it with repeated safe experiences. This is where BWRT and conditioning work do their best work in 1:1.

Level 3, the mind-led story

"I'm losing my edge." "I'm not myself any more." "What if this is permanent?" The symptoms may be real; the catastrophic meaning is a separate layer. Separate the symptom from the story, test the fear against what actually happened this week, and shorten the what-if chain to the next real step.

Ways to work on this pillar

  • The free check, as often as you like, one moment at a time.
  • 1:1 sessions with me, fifty minutes, working the levels in order. Start with a free 25-minute call.
  • The Emotional Downshift program, the whole method as a self-paced course with the book included, if you want to run it yourself. See the program.
This pillar is regulation work, not therapy or medical care. It does not diagnose. If low mood, panic or worry has been with you most days for a few weeks, or you are in crisis, your GP or a crisis line is the right first call.
